Crown Work
William Bird Tree Services offer a number of Tree Crown Maintenance services
As trees grow they can become bulky and this can cause problems. The branches can become brittle if there is too much weight in the tree and light may not be able to reach the lower parts of the tree or ground. When we reshape, we cut the outside branches back which reduces the overall size of the tree and gives it a much better shape.
It isn’t just about making the tree pleasing to look at, it also means that the smaller lower branches don’t have so much weight on them and the tree overall has much better, stronger support. This in turn keeps the tree healthier and ensures it has a longer life.
We have a number of techniques to help maintain the tree depending on what we discover during a survey. Depending on what we find, we use the relevant process to resolve the issue. These techniques can include:
Crown Thining
Crown thinning is the removal of a small portion of secondary and small live branches to produce a uniform density of foliage around an evenly spaced branch structure.
It is usually confined to broad-leaved species.
Crown thinning includes crown cleaning and does not alter the overall size or shape of the tree.
Common reasons for crown thinning are to allow more light to pass through the tree, reduce wind resistance or to lessen the weight of heavy branches and improve form.
Crown Lifting
Crown lifting is the removal of the lowest branches and preparing of lower branches for future removal, normally to give a uniform height from ground level.
Good practice dictates crown lifting should not normally include the removal of large branches growing directly from the trunk as this causes large wounds which may jeopardise the long term future of the tree.
Common reasons for crown lifting are to bring more light and give access for traffic.
In the U.K. common practice dictates clearance for vehicles is 5.2 metres (~17 feet), and for pedestrians 2.5m (~8 feet).
Every pruning cut inflicts a wound on the tree. The ability of a tree to withstand a wound and maintain healthy growth is greatly affected by the pruning cut – its angle and its position relative to the certain parts of the tree.
As a general rule branches should be removed at their point of attachment or shortened to a lateral which is at 1/3 of the diameter of the removed branch.
Crown Reduction
Crown reduction is used to reduce the height and/or spread of the crown of a tree by the removal of the ends of branches whilst maintaining the tree’s natural shape as far as practicable. This is usually shown in meters of canopy removed from the branch tips.
As a general rule pruning should be avoided during the time of leaf/needle production (when the tree draws on its energy reserves) and at the time of leaf/needle fall (when the tree stores energy).
Outside these periods most trees can be pruned at any time of the year, with a few exceptions:
Cherry, Plum and related trees (Prunus species) should be pruned soon after flowering to reduce the risk of bacterial infection.
Maple, Birth, Beech and Walnut should be pruned in leaf or just after leaf fall and Magnolia in high summer to avoid ‘bleeding’ (excluding sap), which although not considered damaging, can be unsightly.
Crown Clean / Deadwood
A dead-wooding operation will promote good health within your tree. Removal of dead branches with the correct cut will allow your tree to heal naturally and faster, reducing any risk of infection and removing any risk of dead branch failure.
During a crown clean we will also remove damaged, crossing and weak branches from your tree.
This will also promote good health and reduce the risk of future branch failure.
